There can be no strongerevidencein churches that the truths of the Bible have not sanctifiedthe receivers, than theirattachment to some favorite minister,andtheirunwillingnesstoacceptthelabors of some otherteacher,and to be profitedby them. The Lord sendshelp to hischurchastheyneed, notastheychoose; forshort-sightedmortalscannotdiscernwhatisfortheirhighestgood. Itisseldom thatoneministerhasallthequalificationsnecessarytoperfectany one churchinalltherequirements of Christianity; thereforeGod sendsother ministersto followhim , one afteranother, each possessingsome qualificationsin which the others were deficient. The churchshouldgratefullyaccepttheseservantsofChrist,evenastheywould accepttheMasterhimself. They shouldseekto deriveallthe benefitpossiblefrom theinstructionwhich ministers may givethem from the word of God . But the ministersthemselvesare not to be idolized; there shouldbeno religiouspetsand favoritesamong the people; itisthetruthstheybringwhicharetobe acceptedand appreciatedin the meeknessof humility. In theapostles'day,one partyclaimedtobelieve inChrist,yetrefusedtogivedue respecttohisam-bassadors. They claimedto followno human teacher,buttobe taughtdirectlyfromChrist,withouttheaidof ministersof thegospel. They were independentinspirit, and unwillingto submitto the voiceof the church.
