APOLLOS AT CORINTH . 121 Factionsalsowerebeginningtorisethroughthe influenceofJudaizingteachers,who urgedthatthe convertstoChristianityshouldobservetheceremoniallaw inthematterof circumcision. They still maintainedthatthe originalIsraelwere the exaltedandprivilegedchildrenofAbraham,andwere entitledtoallthepromisesmadetohim. Theysincerelythoughtthatin takingthismedium ground betweenJew and Christian,theywouldsucceedin removingtheodiumwhichattachedtoChristianity, andwould gatherinlargenumbersoftheJews. Theyvindicatedtheirposition,whichwasinoppositiontothatofPaul,by showingthatthecourse oftheapostle,in receivingtheGentilesintothe churchwithoutcircumcision,preventedmore Jews from acceptingthe faiththan therewere accessions fromtheGentiles. Thus theyexcusedtheiropposition to the resultsof the calm deliberations of God'sacknowledgedservants. They refusedto admitthatthework of Christ embracedthewholeworld. They claimedthathe was the Saviour of the Hebrews alone; therefore theymaintainedthatthe Gentilesshouldreceive circumcisionbeforebeingadmittedtotheprivileges of the church of Christ . оссаAfter the decision of the council at Jerusalem concerningthisquestion, many were stillof this opinion, but did not then push theiroppositionany farther.
