He reasonedwiththem from houseto house, both publiclyand privately, showing them Christin prophecy; thathe was Jesuswhom Paul had preached, and thattheirexpectationsof another Messiahtocome were invain. Thus Paulplanted theseedoftruth, and Apolloswateredit; and the factthatApollossupportedthe missionof Paul gavecharactertothepastlaborsofthegreatapostleamong them . His successin preachingthegospelledsome ofthechurchto exalthislaborsabovethoseofPaul, whilehe himselfwas working in harmony with Paul for the advancement of the cause . This rivalspiritthreatenedtogreatlyhindertheprogressoftruth. Paulhad purposelypresentedthe gospeltothe Corinthiansinitsveriestsimplicity. Disappointedwith the resultof hislaborsatAthens, where he had broughthislearningand eloquencetobearupon hishearers,he determinedto pursuean entirelydifferentcourseatCorinth. He presentedtheretheplain, simpletruth, unadorned withworldlywisdom, and studiouslydweltupon Christ, and his mission to the world. The eloquentdiscoursesofApollos, and hismanifestlearning, were contrastedby hishearerswiththe purposelysimpleandunadornedpreachingofPaul. Many declaredthemselvestobe under theleadershipofApollos, whileotherspreferredthelabors ofPaul. Satancame intotakeadvantageofthese imaginarydifferencesin the Corinthianchurch, temptingthemto holdtheseChristianministersin contrast. Some claimedApollosas theirleader, somePaul, and some Peter.
