He had beenaccompaniedto Ephesusby Aquila and Priscilla, and he now leftthem to carryforward thegood work whichhe had begun. ItwasatthistimethatApollos,anAlexandrian Jew,visitedEphesus. He had receivedthe highestGrecianculture,and was a scholarand an orator. He had heardtheteachingsofJohn theBaptist,had receivedthe baptismof repentance, and was a livingwitnessthatthework oftheprophet was notinvain. Apolloswas a thoroughstudent oftheprophecies, and an ableexpounderof the Scriptures,publiclyproclaiminghisfaithinChrist, asfarashe himselfhad receivedthelight. Aquila and Priscillalistenedto him, and saw thathis teachingswere defective. He had not a thoroughknowledgeof the missionof Christ,his resurrectionand ascension, and ofthe work of his Spirit,theComforterwhichhe sentdown toremain withhispeopleduringhis absence. They accordinglysentforApollos,andtheeducatedoratorreceivedinstructionfromthem withgratefulsurprise andjoy. Through theirteachingshe obtaineda clearerunderstandingoftheScriptures,and became one of the ablestdefenders of the Christianchurch . Thus a thoroughscholarand brilliantoratorlearned theway oftheLord more perfectlyfromtheteachingsofa Christianman and woman whose humble employmentwas thatoftent-making.Apollos,having become betteracquaintedwith thedoctrineof Christ,now feltanxioustovisitCorinth,andtheEphesianbrethrenwrotetotheCorinthianstoreceivehim asa teacherinfullharmony withthechurchofChrist.
