106 LIFE OF PAUL . fectto exasperateinsteadof to convincethese stubbornopposers. They couldnotbringargumentstoshowthathe was not preachingthetruth, and forlackof such evidence, they resortedto deceptionand malignantattack. They blasphemedthetruthand the name of JesusofNazareth. No words were too bitter,no devicetoolow, forthem touseintheirblindanger and opposition. They couldnot deny thatChrist had worked miracles; but they declaredthathe had performedthem throughthepower of Satan; and theynow boldlyaffirmedthatthewonderful works of Paul were accomplishedthroughthe same agency . Those who preach unpopulartruth in our day are oftenmet by the professedChristian world with oppositionsimilarto thatwhich was broughtagainstthe apostleby the unbelieving Jews. Many who make themost exaltedprofession, and who shouldbe light-bearerstotheworld, arethemost bitterand unreasonablein opposing the work of the chosen servants of God . Not satisfiedwithchoosingerrorand fablesforthemselves, theywrestthe Scripturesfrom the truemeaning. in order to deceive others and hinder them from acceptingthe truth. Though Paulhad a measureof success, yet he becameverywearyofthesightofhiseyesand the hearingofhisearsinthecorruptcityof Corinth, He doubtedthewisdomof buildingup a church from the material he found there. He considered Corintha veryquestionablefieldoflabor, and determinedtoleaveit. The depravitywhichhe witnessedamong theGentiles, and the contemptand insultwhich he receivedfrom theJews, caused him greatanguishofspirit.
