PAUL AT CORINTH . 107 As he was contemplatingleavingthe cityfora more promisingfield, and feelingveryanxiousto understandhisduty in the case, the Lord appearedto him in a visionof the night,and said, " Be notafraid, butspeak,and holdnotthypeace; forI am withthee,and no man shallseton theeto hurtthee; forI have much peoplein thiscity." Paul understood thisto be a command to remain in Corinth,and a guaranteethattheLord would give increaseto the seed sown . Strengthenedand encouraged, he continuedto labortherewithgreat zealand perseveranceforone yearand sixmonths . A largechurchwas enrolledunder the bannerof JesusChrist. Some came from among the most dissipatedoftheGentiles; and many of thisclass were trueconverts,and became monuments of God's mercy and the efficacyof the bloodof Christto cleanse from sin. The increasedsuccessofPaul inpresentingChrist tothepeople,rousedtheunbelievingJews tomore determinedopposition. They aroseina body with greattumult,andbroughthim beforethejudgmentseatof Gallio,who was then deputyof Achaia. They expected,ason formeroccasionsof a similar character,to have the authoritieson their side; and with loud and angry voicesthey preferred theircomplaintsagainsttheapostle,saying, " This fellowpersuadethmen toworshipGod contraryto the law ." The proconsul, disgustedwith the bigotryand self-righteousnessoftheaccusingJews, refusedto takenoticeof the charge. As Paulpreparedto speakinself-defense, Gallioinformedhim thatit was not necessary. Then, turningto the angry accusers,he said," Ifitwere a matterof wrong or wickedlewdness,O ye Jews, reasonwould thatI
