At thecallof duty,he would meet themost violentopponents, and silencetheir proud boasting, and then he would resumehishumble employment. Hiszeal and industryshould be a rebuke to indolenceor selfisheaseintheministerof Christ. Any labor thatwillbenefithumanity or advance the cause of God , shouldbe regarded as honorable. In preachingthegospelatCorinth,theapostle adopted a differentcourse of action from that which had marked his labors at Athens . While in the latterplace,he had adapted hisstyletothe character of his audience ; and much of his time had been devoted to the discussion of natural religion, matching logicwith logic,and science with science. But when he reviewed the time and labor which he had there devoted to the expositionof Christianity,and realizedthathis styleof teachinghad not been productiveof much fruit,he decided upon a differentplan of labor in the future. He determined to avoid elaboratearguments and discussionsof theories asmuch aspossible,and tourgeupon sinnersthe doctrineof salvationthrough Christ. In his epistleto his Corinthian brethren, he afterward describedhismanner oflaboringamong them:- "And I,brethren,when I came toyou,came notwithexcellencyofspeechorofwisdom,declaringuntoyou thetestimonyofGod. For I determinednottoknow anythingamongyou,saveJesus Christ,and him crucified. And I was with you inweakness,and infear,and in much-trembling. And my speechand my preachingwas not with
