PAUL AT CORINTH . 101 teachers. He crossedthe seas,and traveledfarand near,untila largeportionoftheworldhad learned fromhislipsthestoryofthe crossof Christ. He possesseda burningdesireto bringperishingmen to a knowledgeof the truththrougha Saviour's love. Hiswholesoulwas engagedintheworkofthe ministry; but he seatedhimselfto the labor of his humble tradethat he might not be burdensome to the churchesthatwere pressedwith poverty. Althoughhe had plantedmany churches, he refusedtobe supportedby them,fearingthathisusefulnessand successasa ministerofChristmightbe injuredby suspicionsthathe was preachingthegospelforgain. He would removefrom hisenemies all occasionto misrepresenthim, and thus to detractfrom the forceof hismessage. As a laborerin the gospel, Paul might have claimedsupport, insteadof sustaininghimself; butthisrighthe was willingtoforego. Although feebleinhealth,he laboredduringtheday inservingthe causeof Christ, and then toileda large shareofthenight,and frequentlyallnight,that hemightmake provisionforhisown and others' necessities. The apostlewouldalsogivean example totheChristianministry,dignifyingand honoring industry. While thuspreachingand working,he presentedthehighesttypeof Christianity. He combinedteachingwithhislabor; andwhiletoiling withthoseofhistrade,he instructedthem concerningtheway ofsalvation. In pursuingthiscourse, he had accesstomany whom he couldnot otherwise have reached .
