100 LIFE OF PAUL . prevailedamong themas a people. Of thisclass wereAquilaand Priscilla,who afterwardbecame distinguishedasbelieversinChrist. Paul,becomingacquaintedwiththecharacteroftheseexcellent persons,abodewiththem; andhavinginhisyouth learnedtheirtradeof making tents, which were much used in that warm climate,he worked at thisbusinessfor hisown support. The Hebrews had beeninstructedofGod,by his servantMoses,totrainup theirchildrentoindustrioushabits. Thatpeoplewerethusledtolookupon indolenceasa greatsin,and theirchildrenwereall requiredtolearnsometradeby which,ifnecessary, theycouldgaina livelihood. Thosewhoneglected todo thiswere regardedasdepartingfromtheinstructionof the Lord . Labor was considered elevatinginitsnature,and the childrenweretaught tocombinereligionand business. Inthetimeof Christ, the Jews, thoughwealthy, stillfollowed their ancient custom . Paulwas highlyeducated,and was admiredfor hisgeniusand eloquence. He was chosenby his countrymenas a member of the Sanhedrim, and wasaRabbiofdistinguishedability; yethiseducationhad notbeenconsideredcomplete,untilhe had servedan apprenticeshipatsome usefultrade. He rejoicedthathe wasabletosupporthimselfby manuallabor,andfrequentlydeclaredthathisown hands had ministeredtohisnecessities. Whileina city of strangers, he would not be chargeableto anyone. When his means had been expended to advance the causeof Christ,he resortedto histrade inordertogain a livelihood. No man everlivedwho was a more earnest, energetic,and self-sacrificingdiscipleof Christthan was Paul. He was one of the world'sgreatest
