Once establishedat Corinth,itwould be readily communicatedto allpartsoftheworld. Yet the apostlesaw on every hand serious obstaclesto theprogressof hiswork . Venus was thefavoritegoddess; and a greatnumber or dissolutewomen were employedin connection with the worship of thisreigningdeity,forthe purposeofattractingthedevoteesofpopularvice. The Corinthianshad become conspicuous, even among theheathen,fortheirgrossimmorality. There was now a much largernumber ofJews inCorinththanatany previoustime. Thispeople had been generallyfavoredby the rulingpowers. and treated with much consideration . But for some timetheyhad beengrowingarrogantand insubordinate,and aftertheyhad rejectedand crucifiedChrist, thelightof the world, theyfollowed theirown darkenedunderstanding,manifestedmore openlytheirenvy and hatredof the powersthat governedthem, and proudlyboastedof a king of theJews who was tocome with greatpower,overthrowtheirenemies, and establisha magnificent kingdom. Itwas inviewof thisvaguebeliefthat theyhad rejectedthe Saviour. The same malignantspiritthatactuatedthem intheirpersecutior. ofthe Son of God led them torebelagainstthe Roman government.
