When the deputy sent for the apostles,thathe might be instructedinthetruth, Satan was on hand with hisservant,seekingto thwartthepurposeof God ,and preventthisinfluentialman from embracing the faithof Christ. Thisagent of Satan greatlyhinderedthe work of the apostles. Thus does the fallenfoe ever work ina specialmanner topreventpersonsof influence, who couldbe ofgreatservicetothe cause,from embracingthetruthof God . But Paul,in thepower of theHoly Ghost,rebuked the wicked deceiver. He "sethis eyes on him , and said,O fullof all subtiltyand all mischief, thou childof the devil, thou enemy of allrighteousness,wiltthou not ceaseto pervert the rightways of the Lord ? And now ,behold,thehand oftheLord isupon thee,and thou shaltbe blind,not seeingthe sun for a season. And immediately therefellon him a mist and a darkness; and he went about seekingsome to leadhim by the hand. Then the deputy, when he saw what was done,believed,beingastonished at the doctrine of the Lord ." The sorcererhad closedhis eyes to the evidencesoftruth,and thelightofthegospel,thereforetheLord,in hisrighteousanger,causedhis naturaleyestobe closed,shuttingoutfrom him thelightofday. Thisblindnesswas notpermanent,but onlyfor a season,to warn him to repent,and toseek pardonof God whom he had so offended.
