To preparehim forhisextensiveand importantwork , God had broughthim intocloseconnectionwith himself, and had opened beforehis enraptured visiona glimpseof the beauty and glory of Heaven . God communicatedwith the devout prophets and teachers in the church at Antioch . " As theyministeredtothe Lord,and fasted,theHoly Ghost said,Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them ." These apostleswere thereforededicated to God in a most solemnmanner by fastingand prayer and thelayingon of hands; and theyweresentforth totheirfieldof laboramong theGentiles. Both Paul and Barnabas had been laboringas ministersof Christ, and God had abundantly blessedtheir efforts; but neitherof them had previouslybeen formallyordainedto the gospel ministryby prayerand the layingon of hands. They were now authorizedby the church, not onlyto teachthe truth,but to baptize, and to organizechurches, being investedwith fullecclesiasticalauthority. This was an important eraforthechurch. Though the middlewallof partitionbetween Jew and Gentile had been brokendown by thedeathof Christ,lettingthe Gentilesintothe fullprivilegesof the gospel, stillthe vail had not yet been torn from the eyesof many of the believingJews, and theycouldnot clearlydiscernto the end of that which was abolishedby the Son of God .
