PAUL BEFORE NERO . 315 / \ among thefaithless,loyaland trueamong thedisloyaland disobedient,he standsasGod'srepresentative, and his words are as a voice from Heaven . There is no traceof fear,sadness,or discouragement in countenance or manner. Strong in hisconsciousinnocence,clothedwith thepanoplyof truth,he rejoicesthathe isa son of God. His words arelikea shoutof victory above the roar of the battle. The cause of truth towhich he has devotedhislife,he makes appear as theonlycause thatcan never fail. Though he may perishfor the truth'ssake, the gospel willnot perish. God lives,and the truthwill triumph. His countenance glows with the light of Heaven,asthough reflectingtheraysofthesun. Many who lookedupon him in thathallofjudgment " saw his face as it had been the face of an angel." Tearsdimmed many eyesthathad never before been seen to weep . The gospel message founditsway totheminds and heartsof many who would never have listened to it but for the imprisonmentof Paul. Never had Nero heard the truth as he heard itupon thatoccasion. Never had the enormous guiltof hisown lifebeenrevealedto him as it was revealedthat day . The lightof Heaven had piercedthesin-pollutedchambersofhissoul. He quaked with terrorat the thoughtof a tribunal before which he,the rulerof the world, shouldbe arraigned,and where hisdeedsshould meet a just reward. He was afraidof the apostle'sGod , and he dared not pass sentence upon Paul, againstwhom no accusationhad been sustained. A sense of awe for a time restrained hisbloodthirstyspirit.
