314 LIFE OF PAUL . As Paul standsbeforetheemperorof theworld, his words strike a chord which vibrates in the hearts of even the most hardened, and which thrillsin unison with the mission of angels. Truth, clear and convincing, overthrows error and refutes falsehood. Never before had that company listenedtowordslikethese. Lightwas shiningintodarkenedmindsthatwouldgladly followthe guidanceof itspreciousrays. The truthsspokenon thatoccasionwould neverdie. Though theutteranceof a feebleand aged prisoner, they were destinedto shake the nations. They were endowed with a power that would livethrough alltime, influencingthe heartsof men when the lipsthat uttered them shouldbe silentin a martyr's grave. As Paul gazedupon the throngbeforehim,— Jews,Greeks,Romans ,withstrangersfrom many lands, his soul was stirredwith an intensedesirefor theirsalvation. He lost sight of the occasion,of theperilswhich surroundedhim,of the terrible fate which seemed so near . He looked above allthis,to Jesus,theDivine Intercessor, theAdvocatepleadingbeforethe throneof God in behalfof sinfulmen. Earnestlyhe pointed hishearerstothe greatSacrificemade in behalf ofthefallenrace,and presentedbeforethem man inhistruedignityand value. An infiniteprice had been paid for man's redemption;provision had beenmade thathe might be exaltedtoshare the throne of God and to become the heir of immortalriches. By angelmessengers, earthwas connected with Heaven ,and allthe deeds of man , good orevil,were open beforetheeyeof Infinite Justice . Thus pleads the advocate of truth; faithful
