Not one of them fora moment believedhim guilty; butthey knew thatsuch a charge,made withthefaintest show of plausibility,would sealhisdoom . An opportunitysoon offeredto executetheirplans. At the house of a disciplein the cityof Troas, Paul was again seized, and from thisplacehe was hurriedaway to his finalimprisonment. The arrestwas effectedby the effortsof Alexanderthecoppersmith,who hadsounsuccessfully opposedtheapostle'swork at Ephesus,and who now seizedtheopportunityto be revenged on_one whom he could not defeat. Paul in his second Epistleto Timothy afterwardreferredto the machinationsof thisenemy of the faith: " Alexander the coppersmithdid me much evil. The Lord reward him accordingto his works." In his firstepistlehe spoke in a similarmanner of Hymeneus and Alexander as among those who " concerningfaithhave made shipwreck;" "whom ," he says, "I have delivereduntoSatan, thattheymay learnnot to blaspheme." These men had departedfromthefaithofthegospel,and furthermorehad done despiteto the Spiritof graceby attributingtothe power of Satan the wonderful revelationsmade to Paul. Having rejectedthe truth, they were filledwith hatred againstit,and soughttodestroyitsfaithfuladvocate . Reformatoryactionis always attendedwith loss,sacrifice,and peril.
