Thislast preciousintervalof freedom was earnestlyimproved in laboringamong the churches. He sought to establisha firmer union between the Greek and Eastern churches which he had raised up,and to guard them againstthe subtleheresiesthatwere creepingin to corruptthefaith. The trialsand anxietieswhich he had endured, had prevedupon hisphysicaland mentalenergies. The infirmitiesof age were upon him. He feltthathiswork was nearlyaccomplished. At Jerusalem and at Antioch he had defended Christianityagainst the narrow restrictionsof Judaism. He had preachedthe gospelto the pagans of Lycaonia, to the fanaticsof Galatia, to the colonistsof Macedonia,tothefrivolousart-' worshipersof Athens ,to the pleasure-lovingmerchants of Corinth,to the half-barbarous nations of Dalmatia ,totheislandersof Crete,andto slaves, soldiers,and men of rank and station,in themultitudesat Rome . Now he was doing his last work . CHAPTER XXIX . THE FINAL ARREST . THOUGH Paul'slaborswere chieflyamong the churches,he couldnot escapethe observationof hisenemies.
