They feltthatthey would not be losers inbecomingtheadvocatesoftruthand pushing forwardthework from which Paul was temporarilywithdrawn. In theseways weretheapostle'sbondsinfluential,sothatwhen toallappearancehe coulddo theleast,when his power and usefulnessseemed cut off, then it was that he was gatheringsheavesfor Christ,in fieldsfrom which he seemedwhollyexcluded. When a servant of God is withdrawn from activeduty,when his voiceisno longerheard in encouragementand reproof, we , in our shortsightedjudgment ,oftenconcludethat hisusefulness is at an end . But the Lord does not so regardit. The mysteriousprovidencesoverwhich we sooftenlament,aredesignedofGod toaccomplisha work which otherwisemight neverhave been done . The Christianwho manifestspatienceand cheerfulnessunder bereavement and suffering, who meets death with the peace and calmness of an unwaveringfaith,may accomplishfar more towardovercomingtheoppositionoftheenemies ofthegospelthan he couldhave effectedhad he laboredwith hisutmostenergyday and nightto bringthem to repentance. When the servants of Christ move actively throughtheland to contend againstprevailingerrorsand superstitions,theyaredoingthework which theLord has given them, standingindefenseofthegospel. But when,throughSatan's malice, they are persecuted, theiractivelabor hindered, and theycastintoprison,as was Paul,
