Paul was not alone in the trialswhich he enduredfrom theloveofeaseand desireforworldly gain in hisprofessedbrethren. His experience isstillsharedby thefaithfulservantsof Christ. Many , even of those who professto believe the solemn truths for this time, feel but little moral responsibility. When they see that the pathofduty isbesetwithperplexitiesand trials, theychoosea way forthemselves,wherethereis lesseffortneeded; where thereare fewer risksto run,fewer dangersto meet. By selfishlyshunningresponsibilities,theyincreasetheburdensof the faithfulworkers,and at the same time separate themselvesfrom God , and forfeitthe reward theymight have won . Allwho willwork earnestlyand disinterestedly,inhisloveand fear, God will make co-laborers with himself. Christ hashiredthem atthepriceof hisown blood,the pledgeof an eternalweightof glory. Of every one of hisfollowershe requireseffortsthat shall in some degreecorrespondwith the pricepaid and the infinite reward offered. Among the discipleswho ministeredto Paul atRome was Onesimus,a fugitiveslavefrom the city of Colosse. He belongedto a Christian named Philemon , a member of the Colossian church . But he had robbed his master and fled toRome . Here thispagan slave,profligateand unprincipled,was reachedby the truthsof the gospel.
