He was willingto followhis Master'sexampleof earnestnessand self-sacrifice,thathe mightwin soulstoJesusand the blessednessof Heaven . And now , while sharingthelotofPaultheprisoner,Mark understoodbetterthan ever before,that it is infinite gaintowin Christatwhatevercost,and infinite lossto win the world and lose the soul for whose redemptionthebloodof Christwas shed. Mark was now a usefuland belovedhelperof the apostle,and he continuedfaithfuleven unto the end. In writingfrom Rome just priorto his martyrdom, Paul bade Timothy," Take Mark , and bring him withthee; for he isprofitableto me fortheministry." Demas was now a faithfulhelperoftheapostle. A few years afterward, however, in the same lettertoTimothy which commends Mark'sfidelity, Paul writes, " Demas hath forsakenme , havinglovedthispresentworld." For worldly gain,Demas barteredeveryhigherand noblerconsideration. How short-sighted,how unwise the exchange! Thosewho possessonlyworldlywealth or honor are poor indeed, however much theymay proudlycalltheirown . Thosewho choose to sufferfor Christ'ssake, will win eternal riches; they willbe heirsofGod ,and joint-heirs with hisSon.
