ARRIVAL AT ROME . 279 ceive the teachings of God's word than were thoseof ages past. Paul'sworst enemieswere among the Jews,who made the highestclaims to godliness. It was to this classthat Christ said, "Ye know not theScriptures,neitherthe power of God ." The most bitteropposersof truthto-day arefound among thosewho profess to be its defenders . God has made hispeoplethedepositariesof his law. They must uphold the claims of that down -troddenlaw againsttheoppositionof ministersof the gospel, againstmen of learning, position, and authority. The evidenceof its bindingclaimscannot be overthrown; yet its enemieswillcome againand againtothebattle, urgingthesame arguments, every time refuted, and as often renewed . Paul was ledand taughtby theHoly Spirit; but,notwithstandingthis, thosewho were not thustaught werefilledwith jealousyand malice when they saw him advocatingtruthswhich theyhad notsanctioned. Theyweredetermined that he shouldmove no fasterthan they. Had they,likethenobleBereans,searchedtheScriptureswith a humble,teachablespirit,they would have learnedthetruthasPaul preachedit; but theystudiedonly to findsomethingto sustain themselves and condemn him . Those whoThe truthalwaysinvolvesa cross. willnot believe,opposeand deridethosewho do believe. The factthatitspresentationcreatesa storm of opposition,isno evidenceagainstthe truth. The prophetsand apostlesimperiledtheir livesbecausethey would conscientiouslyobeyGod . And our Saviourdeclaresthat “ allthatwill livegodlyinChristJesusshallsufferpersecu-tion." ThisistheChristian'slegacy.
