ARRIVAL AT ROME . 277 He declared that in his unconverted state he had known Christaftertheflesh,notby personal acquaintance,but by the conceptionswhich he, incommon with others,cherishedconcerninghis characterand work . He had rejectedJesusof Nazareth as an impostor because he did not fulfilltheseexpectations. But sincePaul'sconversion,his views of Christand hismissionwere far more spiritualand exaltedthan the Jewish conceptionof the long-promised Messiah. He assertedthathe didnotpresenttothem Christafter the flesh. Herod had seen Christin the days of hishumanity; Annas had seenhim ; Pilateand the chief priestsand rulershad seen him ; the Roman soldiershad seen him . But these had not seenhim with an eye offaith,and discernedhim spirituallyas theglorifiedRedeemer. To apprehend Christby faith,tohave a spiritualknowledgeofhim,was more to be desiredthan a personalacquaintancewith him ashe appearedon earth. The communion with Christ which Paul now enjoyed,was more intimateand moreenduringthan a mere earthlyand human companionship. Some of Paul'shearerseagerlyreceivedthe truth, but othersstubbornlyrefusedto be convinced. The testimonyof the Scriptureswas presentedbeforethem by one who was their equalinlearningand theirsuperiorin mental power, and who had the specialilluminationof theHoly Spirit. They couldnot refutehisarguments,but refusedto accepthisconclusions. The prophecieswhich the rabbisthemselvesapplied toChristwere a greatannoyancetotheseopposing Jews; forthe apostleshowed that the fulfillmentof thesevery propheciesrequiredthem to acceptof Christ.
