He well knew that his courseof extortionand oppressionhad giventhem abundantgroundfor complaint,but he stillhoped toconciliatethem. Hence, though he had a sincererespectfor Paul,he decidedto gratifytheirmaliceby leaving him a prisoner. But allhiseffortswere in vain; though heescapedbanishmentordeath,he was removed from office, and deprivedof the greaterpartof hisill-gottenwealth. Drusilla, thepartnerofhisguilt,afterwardperished,with theironlyson,intheeruptionofVesuvius. His own days were ended in disgraceand obscurity. A ray of lightfrom Heaven had been permitted to shineupon thiswicked man , when Paul reasonedwith him concerningrighteousness,temperance, and a judgment to come. That was his Heaven-sentopportunityto see and to forsake his sins. But he said to the Spirit of God , " Go thy way for thistime; when I have a convenient season, I will callfor thee."
