Therehad beenfrequentdisputes, which had become a settledfeud, between the Jews and the Greeks, concerningtheirrespectiverightsand privilegesinthecity. All thesplendorof Cæsarea, itstemples, itspalaces, and itsamphitheater, were due to the ambition of the firstHerod . Even the harbor,to which Cæsarea owed allits prosperityand importance, had been constructed by him at an immense outlayof money and labor. The Jewish inhabitants were numerous andwealthy, and theyclaimedthecityastheirs, because theirking had done so much for it. The Greeks, with equalpersistency, maintainedtheir rightto the precedence. Near the closeof the two years, these dissensionsled to a fiercecombat in the market -place, resultingin the defeatof the Greeks. As ifthiswere notenough,Felix, whose animositytowardtheJewshad increased everyyear, now gave his soldierslibertytorob the houses of the wealthy.
