210 LIFE OF PAUL . apostle, and sentan addressto the churchesto thateffect. But thesame battlewas againtobe fought, thesame prejudicesoncemore to be met. Paulnow gave hisbrethrenan accountof his laborssincehe partedwiththem fouryearsbefore, and " declaredparticularlywhat thingsGod had wroughtamong theGentilesby hisministry." As he describedthework at Ephesus, which had resultedin raisingup thatlargechurch inthe verystrongholdof heathenism, none couldlisten without interest. But he necessarilytouched upon pointsthat would irritatethosewho had cherishedprejudiceagainsthim. He couldnot recounthisexperienceinGalatiawithoutstating the difficultieswhich he had encountered from thoseJudaizing teacherswho had attempted to misrepresenthis teachingand perverthisconverts. In describingthe work at Corinth, he couldbut mention thosewho had spreadconfusionand strifeamong the church there. Yet he relatedallwith greatgentlenessand courtesy, carefullyavoidingeverythingthat would unnecessarilywound hisbrethren, and dwellingespeciallyupon topicswhere he knew theycould harmonize . The effortwas notwithoutgood results. The SpiritofGod impressedthemindsofthebrethren and affectedtheirhearts. The tidingsof the progressof the gospel, the evidencethat the power of God was working with the apostle's efforts, softenedtheirfeelingstoward Paul, and convincedthem thattheirprejudiceagainsthim was unfounded; and they glorifiedGod forthe wondersofhisgrace. At thecloseofPaul'saddress, thebrethrenjoinedin a seasonof solemn praise, and theAmen ,expressiveof theirhearty sanctionofhiswork, was swelledby many voices.
