These brethren were now calledforward,and oneby one theylaidat the feetof James the offeringswhich the Gentile churcheshad freelygiven,althoughoftenfrom theirdeepestpoverty. Here was tangibleproof of theloveand sympathy feltby thesenew disciplesfor themother-church,and theirdesireto be in harmony with the Jewishbrethren. Here was evidencealso,that Paul had faithfullyfulfilledthe promise given, when at the council yearsbeforehe had been urgedtoremember the poor . Thesecontributionshad costtheapostlemuch time and anxious thought,and much wearisome labor. They farexceededtheexpectationsofthe Jewishelders,and might have beenexpectedto callforthwarm expressionsof gratitudeand appreciation. But Paul'shalf-acknowledgedfears astothemanner in which the giftwould be receivedwere realized. He couldonlyfindcomfort intheconsciousnessthathe had done hisduty, and had encouragedinhisconvertsa spiritof generosityand love. Afterthepresentationof the gifts,Paul gave the brethren an account of his manner of labor, and its results. He had on former occasions stoodbeforethesame assembly,in thesame city. It was beforethe same audience at the apostolic council(Acts 15) yearsbefore,thatherelatedhis experienceinhisconversion,and thegreatwork which God had wrought throughhim among the Gentiles. The Spiritof theLord then witnessed totheword spoken, and under itsinfluencethe councilyieldedtheirprejudices, and expressed themselvesasinharmony with thepositionof the 14
