Philipthe evangelistwas bound to Paul by tiesof the deepestsympathy. A man of clear discernmentand sterlingintegrity, Philiphad been thefirstto break away from the bondage of Jewishprejudice,and thushad helpedprepare the way for the apostle'swork . It was Philip who preachedthe gospelto the Samaritans; it was Philipwho had the couragetobaptizethe Ethiopianeunuch. For a time the historyof these two workers had been closelyintertwined. Itwas theviolentpersecutionof Saul the Phariseethat had scattered the church at Jerusalem , and destroyedthe effectivenessof the organizationof the seven deacons. The flightfrom Jerusalem had led Philip to change his manner of labor,and resultedin hispursuingthe same callingto which Paul gave his life. Precious hourswere thesethat Paul and Philipspentin each other'ssociety; thrillingwere the memories that they recalledof the days when the light which had shoneupon thefaceof Stephen upturned to Heaven as he sufferedmartyrdom, flashedin itsgloryupon Saul the persecutor, bringinghim,ahelplesssuppliant,tothefeetof Jesus . Soon afterthe apostle'sarrivalat Cæsarea, the prophetAgabus came down from Judea. He had beenwarned by theHoly Spirit,of the fatewhich awaitedPaul, and in thesymbolic manner of theancientprophetshe loosenedthe apostle'sgirdle,and with itbound hisown hands
