They made them a golden calftorepresentGod ,and worshipeditin a festivereligiousgathering. Again, it was after enjoyinga luxuriousfeastconnectedwith the worshipofBaal-peorthatmany of theHebrews fellthroughlicentiousness,and theangerof God was manifestedtoward them, and twenty-thrée thousandwere slainby the sword at the command of God through Moses. The apostleadjurestheCorinthians, " Lethim that thinkethhe standeth,take heed lesthe fall." Shouldtheybecome boastfuland self-confident, and neglectto watch and pray,theywould fall intogrievoussin,and calldown upon themselves the wrath of God . Yet Paul would not have them yieldto despondencyor discouragement. Whatever might be theirtemptationsor their dangers,he assuresthem, " God isfaithful,who willnot sufferyou to be tempted above thatye areable;but willwiththetemptationalsomake a way toescape,thatye may be abletobearit." Paulenjoinsuponhisbrethrentoinquirewhat influencetheirwords and works willhave upon others,and to do nothing, however innocentin itself, that would seem to sanctionidolatry, or thatwould offendthescruplesofthosewho might beweak in the faith. "Whether thereforeye eat, ordrink,orwhatsoeverye do,do alltotheglory of God . Give none offense, neitherto the Jews , nor to the Gentiles,nor to thechurch of God ."
