168 LIFE OF PAUL . Paul refershisbrethren to the experience of ancientIsrael, to the blessingswhich rewarded theirobedience, and the judgments which followed theirtransgressions. He remindsthem of the fact that the Hebrews were led in a miraculousmanner from Egypt, undertheprotectionof theshadowy cloudby day and thepillarof fire by night. He recountshow thewholecompany were thus safelyconducted through the Red Sea, while the Egyptians, essayingto crossin like manner , were all drowned . God in these acts acknowledged allIsraelas his church. " They didalleatthesame spiritualmeat, and did all drink the same spiritualdrink; forthey drank of that spiritualRock that followedthem ; and that Rock was Christ." The Hebrews , in all their travels, had Christ as a leader. The smitten rock typifiedChrist, who was to be wounded for men's transgressions, thatthe stream of salvation might flowto them . Notwithstandingthe favor which God manifested to the Hebrews , yet because of their wicked lustfor the luxurieswhich they had left in Egypt , becauseof theirsinsand rebellion,- thejudgments of God came upon them.
