Thus wood ,hay,and stubblehave been laidupon the foundationstoneby heedlessworkmen as preciousacquisitions. When emperors, kings, popes, and priests soughtto defileand destroythistempleof God with sacrilegiousidolatryand persecutionof the faithful,God'seye neverfor a moment lefthis buildingand hisworkmen . In thefaceof gaping prisons,torture,and flames,the work grew under the hands of faithfulmen ; the structure arose, beautiful_andsymmetrical. The workmen were at times almostblindedby the mists of superstitionthat settled dense and dark around them, and they were beaten back by the violenceof theiropponents; yet,likeNehemiah and hisco-laborers,theystillurgedforward the work . Their language was, The God of Heaven livethand reigneth; he willprosperhis own work . Therefore we , his servants, will arise and build .
