156 LIFE OF PAUL . Diana was ruined; her magnificenceutterlyperished; thosewho shouted, " Great is Diana of theEphesians!" perishedwiththeirgoddess and the temple which enshrinedher. Their religionisforgotten,or seemslikean idletale. That templewas builtupon a falsefoundation,and when tried, itwas foundto be worthless. But the stonesthat Paul quarriedout from Ephesus werefoundtobe preciousand enduring. Paul laidhimselfuponon the truefoundation, and broughteverystone,whetherlargeorsmall, polishedor unhewn , common or precious, to be connectedwith the livingfoundation-stone, ChristJesus. Thus slowlyascendedthe temple of the church of God . The apostlesays, " Know ye not thatye are the templeof God ,and that theSpiritof God dwellethinyou ? If any man defilethetempleof God,him shallGod destroy; forthe templeof God isholy,which templeye are ." Paul had ,in vision,a view of the cityof God , with itsfoundations; and he representsthe true Christianconvertstobe gold,silver,and precious stones. But the Jews made the work of Paul exceedinglydifficult. They were continually claimingto be the onlytruechildrenof Abraham ,and thereforetheonlylegitimatebuildingstonesfor God's house; and when the Gentiles acceptedthe gospel, and were brought to the truefoundation,the Jews murmured about this material. Thus they hinderedthe work of God ; nevertheless,the apostleunflinchinglycontinued his labors . Paul and his fellow- workmen were skillful architects,because they had learnedfrom Christ and hisworks. They had notonlytobuild,but
