In his letterto the Corinthians, he writes, further: "If any man buildupon thisfoundation, gold, silver, preciousstones, wood, hay, stubble,everyman's work shallbe made manifest; forthe day shalldeclareit." Some ministers, through their labors, furnish the most preciousmaterial, gold, silver, and precious stones,which representtruemoralworthin those gainedtothecauseby them. The falsematerial, gilded to imitate the true, that is, a carnal mind, and unsanctifiedcharacter, glossedover with seemingrighteousness, may not be readily detectedby mortaleye; but theday of God will test the material . The preciousstonesrepresentthe most perfect Christians,who have been refinedand polished by the grace of God , and by afflictionwhich they have endured with much prayer and patience. Their obedience and love resemble those of thegreatPattern. Theirlivesare beautified and ennobledby self-sacrifice. They willendure thetestof the burning day,for theyare living stones. "Him that overcometh will I make a pillarinthetempleof my God,and he shallgo no more out ." From worldlypolicy,many endeavor,by their own efforts, to become as polishedstones; but they cannot be livingstones, becausethey are notbuiltupon thetruefoundation.
