With marvelousclearnessand energy,he proceededto answer thevariousquestionsproposed by thechurch,and tolaydown generalprinciples, which,ifheeded,would producea betterspiritual condition. His letteris no long-studied productionof theintellect. He did not seekby polishedsentencesto pleasethe ear of his brethren. Their soulswere in peril. He warned them of theirdangers,and faithfullyreproved theirsins. He pointedthem again to Christ, and soughtto kindleanew the fervorof their earlydevotion. After a tender greetingto the church, he referstotheirexperienceunder hisministry,by which theyhave been ledtoturnfrom idolatry totheserviceand worshipof thetrueGod. He remindsthem of the giftsof the Holy Spirit which they have received, and presentsbefore them theirduty tomake continualadvancement intheChristianlife,thattheymay attainto the purityand holinessof Christ. Having thusprepared theway ,he speaksplainlyof the dissensionsamong them , and exhorts his brethren, in the name and by the authorityof Christ, to ceasefrom theirstrife,and to seekearnestlyfor Christianunity and love. Paul was freeto mentionhow and by whom he had been informed of the divisions in the church : " It hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them which are of the houseof Chloe,thattherearecontentionsamong you." Though Paul was an inspiredapostle, theLord didnotrevealto him at alltimesjust the conditionof his people.
