PAUL AT EPHESUS . 101 intorichfieldsof truth, asyet whollyunknown to them . Whoever will give himself to God as fullyasdid Moses, willbe guidedby thedivine hand asverilyas was thegreatleaderof Israel. He may be lowlyand apparentlyungifted; yet ifwith a loving, trustinghearthe obeys every intimationof God's will, his powers willbe purified, ennobled, energized;his capabilitiesincreased. As he treasures the lessons of divine wisdom , a sacred commission is intrusted to him ; he is enabled to make his life an honor to God and a blessingto the world. " The entranceof Thy words givethlight; itgivethunderstanding untothesimple." A mere intellectualknowledge of religious truthisnot enough. There areto-day many as ignorantasthosemen of Ephesusof theHoly Spirit'swork upon the heart. Yet no truth is more clearlytaughtintheword ofGod. Prophets and apostleshave dweltupon thistheme. Christ himself callsour attentionto the growth of the vegetableworld to illustratethe agency of his Spiritinsustainingreligiouslife. The juicesof thevine, ascendingfrom theroot, arediffusedto the branches, sustaininggrowth, and producingblossomsand fruit. So thelifegivingpower of theHoly Spirit, proceedingfrom Christ, and impartedtoeverydisciple, pervades the soul, renews the motives and affections, and eventhemost secretthoughts, and bringsforth thepreciousfruitof holydeeds. The lifeattests theunionwiththetrueand livingVine. The Author of thisspirituallifeisunseen, and theprecisemethod by which it isimpartedand sustainedisbeyond the power of human philosophy toexplain. It isthemysteryof godliness.
