The philosopherturnsasidefrom the lightof salvation,becauseitputshisproudtheoriestoshame. The worldlingrefusestoreceiveit,becauseitwould separatehim fromhisearthlyidols, and draw him toa holierlife,forwhichhe hasno inclination. Paul saw that the character of Christ must be understood,beforemen couldlove him , and view the crosswiththeeyeoffaith. Here must beginthat studywhich shallbe the scienceand the songof theredeemedthroughalleternity. In thelight of the crossalone can the true value of the human soulbe estimated. The refininginfluenceof the grace of Godchangesthe naturaldispositionofman . Heaven would not be desirableto thecarnal-minded ; their natural, unsanctifiedhearts would feelno attractiontowardthatpure and holy place; and ifit were possibleforthem to enter, theywould find nothingtherecongenialto them, intheirsinful condition. The propensitieswhich reignin the naturalheart must be subduedby the grace of Christ,beforefallenman can be elevatedtoharmonizewith Heaven, and enjoythe societyof the pureandholyangels.
