He also states thathe presentsthem to otherchurchesas furnishinga sample of the patientand persevering faithwhich bravelywithstandsthepersecution and tribulationbroughtupon them by the opposition of the enemies of God . He carries them forward tohope forrestfrom alltheircaresand perplexities, when the Lord Jesusshallbe revealed, "in flaming firetaking vengeance on them thatknow not God ,and thatobey not the gospelof our Lord Jesus Christ." He then showed that great eventswere to transpirein thefuture,as foretoldinprophecy,beforeChristshould come. Said the apostle: " Be not soon shaken in mind ,nor be troubled, neitherby spirit, nor by word,nor by letteras from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand . Letno man deceiveyou by any means; forthat day shallnot come,excepttherecome a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed.' The papalpower,so clearlydescribedby the prophetDaniel,was yet to rise, and wage war againstGod'speople,and trampleupon hislaw. Untilthispower shouldhaveperformeditsdeadly and blasphemouswork ,itwould be vain forthe church to look for the coming of theirLord. Thus Paul put to naught the argumentsof thosewho representedhim as teachingthat the day of Christwas at hand. He charged his brethrennot to neglecttheirdutiesand resign themselvestoidlewaiting.
