"Then we whicharealiveandremainshallbe caughtup togetherwiththem intheclouds,tomeettheLord in the air; and so shallwe everbe with the Lord . Wherefore comfort one another with these words ." The hope andjoy which thisassurancegave to theyoung churchat Thessalonicacanscarcelybe understoodby us. That letter,comingfromtheir fatherinthegospel,wasbelievedandcherishedby them , and theirheartswent out in loveto him who had broughtthem thepreciouslightof truth. He had toldthem thesethingsbefore; butatthattime theirminds weregraspingdoctrinesnew and surpassinglystrangetothem,and itisnotsurprising thattheforceof some pointshad notbeenvividly impressedupon theirminds. But theywere hungeringfortruth, and Paul'sepistlegave to their soulsnew hope and strength,a firmerfaithin,and a deeper affectionfor, the Redeemer who had broughtlifeand immortalityto lightthroughhis death . The darknessthathad enshroudedthesepulcher ofthe dead was dispelled; forthey now knew that theirbelievingfriendswould be resurrectedfrom thegrave,andenjoyimmortallifeinthekingdom ofGod . A new splendornow crownedthe Christianfaith,and they saw a new gloryin the life, sufferings,death,and resurrectionofChrist. Paulwrote, " Even so,them alsowhichsleepin JesuswillGod bringwith him." Many interpret thispassageto mean thatthe sleepingonesare broughtwith Christfrom Heaven ; but Paul designedto be understoodthatin likemanner as 8
