“Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.”

Loughborough’s preface is signed at Mountain View, California, May 1, 1905. He describes knowing the Advent movement in 1843 and 1844, preaching as an Adventist from January 2, 1849, and as a Seventh-day Adventist from 1852.

Having been familiar with the advent movement in 1843 and 1844, and having, since Jan. 2, 1849, proclaimed the doctrine, first as an Adventist, and since 1852 as a Seventh-day Adventist, I esteem it a pleasure to “speak the things I have seen and heard.”

J. N. Loughborough, preface, p. iii (PDF scan 1). His conclusion on p. iv (scan 2) invites readers to test what they read by Paul’s counsel to the Thessalonians.

The title page is PDF scan 3. This work follows his earlier Rise and Progress of the Seventh-day Adventists (1892); they are distinct books. The contents trace the time of the end, the second Advent message, its messengers, and its rapid advancement.
