“When did the Adventists obtain light on the sealing message? ... When did the sealing work begin? ... Will any of the people of God who have died since 1848, in the message, be reckoned with the 144,000?”
Questions on the Sealing Message
In 1916, J. N. Loughborough took up three urgent questions: when Adventists received the sealing light, when the sealing work began, and whether those who died in the faith since 1848 could be reckoned with the 144,000. This is not dry history. It is a witness from a pioneer who watched the message form.
The sealing message did not appear in a vacuum.
Loughborough traces the sealing truth from the Sabbath light, Revelation 7, the four winds of Europe in 1848, the Dorchester vision, and the burden to publish present truth. It is a bridge from Bates’s 1849 tract to the final question: who will stand when the winds are released?
“The time is not far distant when the test will come to every soul. The mark of the beast will be urged upon us...”
“We as clearly saw as we now see... that these prophetic words suggested a Sabbath reform.”
“They found, in their study of the Scriptures, that the seventh-day Sabbath was the sign of the living God, and the seal of His law.”
“I do not see how we could draw any other idea... than that the sealing work had begun in 1848-1850.”
“The sealing time is very short, and soon will be over. Now is the time... to make our calling and election sure.”

Loughborough explains that he first presented the substance of this study in two discourses at the Stockton camp ground. Those who heard it asked him to publish it. Because the subject was controversial, he brought it out himself by mail from Lodi, California, dedicating the proceeds after tithe to city work and foreign missions.
