Jerusalem was the metropolisof the Jews , and therewere found the greatestexclusivenessand bigotry. The Jewish Christianswho livedin sightof thetemple would naturallyallowtheir mindstoreverttothepeculiarprivilegesofthe Jews as a nation. As theysaw Christianitydepartingfrom the ceremoniesand traditionsof Judaism,and perceivedthatthepeculiarsacredness with which the Jewish customs had been investedwould soon be lostsightof inthe light of the new faith,many grew indignantagainst Paul,as one who had,in a greatmeasure,caused thischange. Even thediscipleswere notallpreparedtowillinglyacceptthedecisionofthecouncil. Some were zealousfor the ceremoniallaw, and regardedPaul with jealousy,becausethey thoughthisprincipleswere laxin regardtothe obligationoftheJewishlaw. When Peter, at a laterdate, visitedAntioch, he actedinaccordancewiththelightgiven him from Heaven , and the decisionof the council. He overcamehisnaturalprejudicesofarastosit at table with the Gentile converts . But when certain Jews who were most zealous for the ceremoniallaw came from Jerusalem,he changedhis deportmenttoward theconvertsfrom paganism insomarked a degreethatitlefta most painful impressionupon theirminds.
