" Now ,with equalfervorand force,he said,"God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, givingthem theHoly Ghost, even ashe didunto us,and put no differencebetweenus and them, purifyingtheirheartsby faith. Now ,therefore, why tempt ye God ,toput a yoke upon theneck of the disciples, which neitherour fathersnor we were able to bear ?" This yoke was not thelaw of tencommandments, asthosewho opposethe bindingclaimof the law assert; but Peter referredto the law of ceremonies, which was made nulland void by the crucifixionof Christ. " Then allthe multitudekeptsilence, and gave audienceto Barnabas and Paul, declaringwhat miraclesandwondersGodhad wrought among theGentilesby them."James borehistestimonywith decision- that God designedtobringintheGentilestoenjoyall theprivilegesof theJews. The Holy Ghostsaw good not to imposethe ceremoniallaw on the Gentileconverts; and theapostlesand elders, aftercarefulinvestigationofthesubject, saw the matterinthesame light, and theirmind was as themind of theSpiritof God. Jamespresided atthe council, and hisfinaldecisionwas ," Wherefore my sentence is, that we trouble not them which frfrom among the Gentilesareturnedto God ."
