Paulhad pridedhimselfupon his Pharisaical strictness; but after the revelation of Christ to him on the road to Damascus , the mission of the Saviour , and his own work in the conversion of theGentiles,were plaintohismind ; and he fullycomprehended the differencebetween a livingfaith and a dead formalism. Paul still claimed to be one of the childrenof Abraham , and kept the ten commandments in letterand inspiritas faithfullyashe had everdone before his conversionto Christianity. But he knew that the typicalceremonies must soon altogether cease,sincethatwhich theyhad shadowed forth had come to pass, and the lightof the gospel was sheddingitsgloryupon the Jewishreligion, givinga new significancetoitsancientrites. The questionof circumcisionwas warmly discussedin the assembly. The Gentileconverts lived in a community of idolaters. Sacrifices and offeringswere made to senselessidols,by these ignorantand superstitiouspeople. The priestsof thesegods carriedon an extensive merchandisewiththeofferingsbroughttothem; and the Jews feared that the Gentile converts would bringChristianityintodisreputeby purchasingthosethingswhich had beenofferedto idols,and therebysanctioning,in some measure, an idolatrousworship. Also,the Gentileswere accustomed to eat the fleshof animalsthathad beenstrangled; while the Jews had been divinelyinstructedwith regard to the food they shoulduse.
