Soon the voicewhich had so earnestly disputedwith Stephen,was heard in the same synagoguefearlesslyproclaimingthat Jesuswas the Son of God- advocatingthe same cause thatStephen had diedtovindicate. He related his own wonderful experience,and with a heart filledwith yearningfor hisbrethrenand former associates,presentedtheevidencesfromprophecy, as Stephenhad done,that Jesus,who had been crucified, was the.Son of God . But Paul had miscalculatedthespiritof his Jewishbrethren. The same fury thathad burst forthupon Stephen was visitedupon himself. He saw thathemust separatefromhisbrethren, and sorrowfilledhis heart. He would willingly have yieldedup hislife,ifby thatmeans they might have been brought to a knowledge of the truth. The Jews began to lay plans to take his life, and the disciplesurged him to leave Jerusalem; but he lingered, unwillingto leave theplace,and anxioustolabora littlelongerfor his Jewish brethren . He had taken so active a part in themartyrdom of Stephenthathe was deeplyanxiousto wipe out the stainby boldly vindicatingthe truth which had costStephen his life. It looked to him like cowardice to flee from Jerusalem . While Paul, bravingallthe consequencesof sucha step,was prayingearnestlytoGod in the temple,the Saviourappearedto him in vision, saying, " Make haste,and get theequicklyout of Jerusalem; for they will not receivethy testimony concerningme ."
