34 LIFE OF PAUL . tantforhim to undertake. He was an apostle, not chosen of men ,but chosen of God , and his work was plainlystatedtobe among theGentiles. While in Arabia he did not communicate with the apostles; he sought God earnestlywith all hisheart, determiningnot to resttillhe knew fora certaintythathisrepentancewas accepted, andhisgreatsinpardoned. He wouldnot give up the conflictuntilhe had the assurancethat Jesuswould be withhim inhiscoming ministry. He was ever to carryurryabout with him in the body themarks of Christ'sglory,in hiseyes, which had been blindedby the heavenlylight, and he desiredalsoto bear with him constantly theassuranceof Christ'ssustaininggrace. Paul came in closeconnectionwith Heaven , and Jesus communed with him ,and establishedhim in his faith, bestowingupon him hiswisdom and grace. Paulnow returnedtoDamascus, and preached boldlyin thename of Jesus. The Jews could not withstand the wisdom of hisarguments ,and they thereforecounseledtogetherto silencehis voiceby force--theonlyargumentleftto a sinking cause. They decidedto assassinatehim. The apostlewas made acquainted with theirpurpose. The gates of the city were vigilantly guarded, day and night,to cut offhis escape. The anxietyof thedisciplesdrew them to God inprayer; therewas littlesleepingamong them, as theywerebusy in devisingways and means for the escapeof the chosenapostle. Finally they conceiveda plan by which he was letdown from a window ,and lowered over the wall in a basket at night. In thishumiliatingmanner Paul made hisescapefrom Damascus.
