MARTYRDOM OF PAUL AND PETER , THE apostlesPaul and Peterwere for many years widelyseparatedin theirlabors,itbeing the work of Paul to carry the gospelto the Gentiles, while Peter laboredespeciallyfor the Jews . But in the providenceof God ,both were tobearwitnessforChristin theworld'smetropolis,and upon its soilboth were to shed their blood as the seed of a vast harvest of saints and martyrs . About the time of Paul's second arrest,Peter alsowas apprehendedand thrustintoprison. He had made himselfespeciallyobnoxiousto theauthoritiesby hiszealand successin exposing the deceptionsand defeatingthe plotsof Simon Magus the sorcerer, who had followed him to Rome to oppose and hinder the work of the gospel. Nero was a believerin magie, and had patronized Simon . He was therefore greatlyincensedagainstthe apostle, and was thus prompted to order his arrest. The emperor'smaliceagainstPaul was heightenedby thefactthatmembers oftheimperial household,and alsootherpersonsof distinction, had been convertedto Christianityduring his firstimprisonment. For thisreasonhe made
