320 LIFE OF PAUL . And now,sittingday afterday inhisgloomy cell,knowing that at a word or nod from the tyrant Nero his lifemay be sacrificed, Paul thinksof Timothy,and determinesto send for him . Under the most favorablecircumstances, severalmonths must elapsebeforeTimothy can reach Rome from Asia Minor . Paul knows that his own life,for even a singleday ,is uncertain, and he fearsthat Timothy may arrivetoolate, or may hesitatethrough fearof the dangersto be encountered. He has importantcounseland instructionforthe young man towhom sogreat responsibilityisintrusted,and whileurginghim to come without delay, he dictatesthe dying testimonywhich he may not be sparedtoutter. His soulis filledwith lovingsolicitudeforhis son inthe gospel,and forthe church underhis care,and he earnestlyseekstoimpressupon him theimportanceof fidelitytohissacredtrust.The words of Paul to Timothy apply with equalforcetoallthe ministersof Christ,to the closeof time: " I charge thee thereforebefore God,andtheLordJesusChrist,who shalljudge thequickand thedead athisappearingand his kingdom :Preachtheword;be instantin season, out of season; reprove, rebuke,exhortwith all long-sufferingand doctrine." This solemn charge to one so zealousand faithfulaswas Timothy,isanemphatictestimonyto the greatimportanceand responsibilityof the gospelministry. The apostlesummons Timothy, asitwere,beforethe bar of infinitejustice,and in the most impressivemanner chargeshim to preachtheword ; notthe customsor sayingsof men ,but the word of God ; to preach itas one in earnest, "instantin season,out of season,"-
