CONVERSION OF SAUL . 25 againstconviction, and had always ended the matterby avowing hisbeliefthatJesuswas not the Messiah, thathe was an impostor,and that his followers were deluded fanatics. Now Christhad spokento Saul withhisown voice: "Saul, Saul,why persecutestthou me ?" And thequestion," Who art thou, Lord ?" was answered by the same voice, “ I am Jesus,whom thou persecutest." Here Christ identifieshimselfwith his sufferingpeople. Saul, in persecutingthefollowersofJesus,had struckdirectly againstthe Lord of Heaven . Jesusdeclaresthat in afflictinghis brethrenupon earth,Saul had struckagainsttheirHead and Representative in Heaven. In falselyaccusingand testifying againstthem,he had falselyaccusedand testified against the Saviour of the world. Here it is plainlyseen that Christsuffersin thepersonof his saints . When theeffulgentglorywas withdrawn,and Saul arose from the earth, he found himself totallydeprivedof sight. The brightnessof Christ'sgloryhad been too intenseforhis mortal sight,and when itwas removed,theblacknessof nightsettledupon his vision. He believedthat hisblindnesswas the punishment of God for his cruelpersecutionof the followersof Jesus.
