Many churches might in truth regard him as their fatherin the gospel. Such a man , who had sacrificedevery earthlyconsiderationin the serviceof God, had a specialclaimupon the loveand sympathy of hisconvertsand fellowlaborers . CHAPTER XXX . PAUL BEFORE NERO . WHEN Paul was summoned to appearbefore the emperor for his trial,it was with the near prospectof certaindeath. The aggravatednature of thecrime chargedagainsthim, and the prevailinganimositytoward the Christians,left littleground forhopeof a favorableissue. It was the practiceamong the Greeks and Romans toallowan accusedpersonan advocate topresenthiscasein a courtof justice,and to plead in hisbehalf. By forceof argument,by hisimpassionedeloquence,orby entreaties,prayers, and tears, such an advocate would often securea decisionin favor of the prisoner,orfailing in this, would mitigatethe severityof his sentence . But no man ventured to act as Paul's counselor advocate; no friendwas at hand ,even to preservea recordof the chargesbrought againsthim by hisaccusers,or of thearguments which he urged in his own defense. Among the Christiansat Rome , there was not one who came forwardto stand by him in that trying hour .
