But he taughtprinciples that struckat the very foundationof slavery, and that, carriedintoeffect,would surelyundermine thewholesystem. " Where the Spiritof the Lord is,thereis liberty." The religionof Christhas a transformingpower upon the receiver . The converted slave became a member of the body of Christ, and as such was to be loved and treatedas a brother, a fellow-heirwith hismasterof the blessingsof God and theprivilegesof the gospel. In the same spiritwere servantsto perform theirduties; " not with eyeservice, asmen-pleasers, but as theservantsof Christ, doing the will of God from the heart." Christianitymakes a strongbond of union between masterand slave, king and subject, the gospelministerand the most degradedsinner who has found in Christ relief from his burden of crime. They have beenwashed inthesame blood,quickenedby the same Spirit; they are made one in Christ Jesus . CHAPTER XXVII . CÆSAR'S HOUSEHOLD . THE gospel has ever achieveditsgreatest successamong thehumblerclasses. "Not many wisemen afterthe flesh,not many mighty,not many noble,arecalled."
