Knowing itsvenomous nature,they watchedhim closelyforsome time, expecting every moment to see him fall down , writhingin terribleagony. But as no unpleasantresultsfollowed, they changed their minds,and,likethe peopleof Lystra,saidthat hewas a god. By thiscircumstancePaulgained a strong influenceover the islanders, and he soughtfaithfullyto employ it in leadingthem to acceptthetruthsof thegospel. For threemonths theship'scompany remained at Melita. During thistime Paul and hisfellowlaborersimproved every opportunityto preach the gospel. The Lord wrought through them in a remarkable manner , and for Paul'ssake the entirecompany were treatedwith great kindness; alltheirwants were supplied, and upon leavingtheywere liberallyprovidedwitheverything needfulfor theirvoyage. The chiefincidentsof theirstayare thus brieflyrelatedby Luke :- "In the same quarterswere possessionsof the chiefman oftheisland,whosename was Publius; who receivedus,and lodgedus threedays courteously. And itcame to pass,that the fatherof Publiuslaysickof a feverand of a bloodyflux; towhom Paul enteredin,and prayed,and laid his hands on him , and healed him . So when thiswas done,othersalso, which had diseasesin the island, came , and were healed; who also honored us with many honors; and when we departed,theyladedus withsuchthingsas were necessary."
