THE VOYAGE AND SHIPWRECK . 267 nothaveloosedfrom Crete, andto have gained thisharm and loss. And now I exhortyou to be ofgood cheer; forthereshallbe no lossof any man's lifeamong you,but oftheship. For there stoodby me thisnighttheangelofGod ,whose I am ,and whom I serve, saying,Fear not,Paul; thoumust be broughtbeforeCæsar ; and,lo,God hath given thee all them that sail with thee. Wherefore, sirs,be of good cheer; for I believe God , that it shall be even as it was told me . Howbeit we must be castupon a certainisland." At thesewords hope revived. Passengersand crew rousedfrom theirapathy, and put forthall possibleexertionto savetheirlives. Therewas much yet tobe done. Every effortwithintheir power must be put forthto avertdestruction; forGod helpsthoseonly who help themselves. Itwas thefourteenthnightthattheyhad been tossedup and down on the black, heaving billows, when , amid the sound of the storm, the sailorsdistinguishedthe roar of breakers, and reportedthatthey were near some land. They " sounded, and found it twenty fathoms; and when theyhad gone a littlefurther, theysounded again, and founditfifteenfathoms." Theywere now threatenedby a new danger, ofhavingtheir shipdrivenupon some rock-bound coast. They immediatelycastout four anchors, which was theonlythingthatcouldbe done. All through the remaininghours of thatnight theywaited, knowing that any moment might be theirlast. The leakwas constantlyincreasing, and theship might sink at any time, even if the anchors held . At lastthrough rain and tempestthe gray lightfellupon theirhaggardandghastlyfaces.
